Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) saves a tooth whose nerve has become infected, inflamed or damaged, usually from deep decay, a crack, repeated dental work, or trauma. Without treatment, the tooth almost always needs extracting, which leads to a gap and the cost of replacing it later. With treatment, your natural tooth can last another 10 to 20 years or more.
The procedure removes the infected nerve tissue, thoroughly cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it with a biocompatible filling material. A crown is usually fitted afterwards to protect the tooth long-term. At our Wimbledon practice, every root canal is performed by Dr Viktorija Bird using a high-magnification dental microscope, which dramatically increases precision and success rates compared to traditional techniques.
The roots of a tooth contain tiny canals as fine as a human hair, often invisible to the naked eye. Missing one of these canals is the most common reason root canals fail and need redoing. Under high-magnification microscope, Dr Bird can identify and clean every canal precisely, meaning a far higher chance of saving your tooth first time. Most general dental practices in Wimbledon don't use a microscope for endodontics, it's a meaningful clinical advantage.
Fixed pricing based on which tooth is involved, confirmed in writing before treatment.
A crown is almost always recommended after root canal treatment to protect the now-fragile tooth, we'll discuss this with you upfront.
Endodontics rewards precision and patience. Your case will be led by our microscope-trained clinician.

Viktorija has extensive experience in root canal treatment using a dental microscope for precise, comfortable results. She's known for taking the time to explain exactly what's happening at every stage, which makes a huge difference for patients who've been told they need root canal and are understandably nervous about it.
From £395 for front teeth, premolars and molars priced higher due to their additional roots and canals. The exact cost is confirmed in writing before treatment, after a clinical exam and X-ray. 0% finance is available.
This is the biggest myth in dentistry. Modern root canal treatment under local anaesthetic is no more uncomfortable than a filling, and crucially, it removes the actual cause of any toothache. Most patients tell us they wish they'd had it done sooner.
Most cases complete in 1–2 appointments of 60–90 minutes each. Simpler front-tooth cases often finish in one visit; complex molar root canals usually take two.
Saving your natural tooth is almost always preferable. A treated tooth supported by a crown can last 10–20 years. Extraction means either a gap, denture, bridge or implant, all involving more work and cost over time.
Dr Viktorija Bird will assess your tooth, explain your options clearly, and confirm a fixed price in writing before any treatment begins.
