Moving to a new country to study brings a long list of things to organise, accommodation, a bank account, a travel card, and dental care often slips to the bottom of it. But a quick check-up early in your time in the UK can save a lot of pain, cost and stress later. If you're an international student living in or around Wimbledon, here's a clear, friendly guide to how dental check-ups work here, what they cost, and how to register.
Why a dental check-up matters when you arrive
The dental system in the UK may work differently from the one back home. There's no automatic enrolment, you choose where to register and, as an adult, you usually pay for treatment, whether through the NHS or privately. Sorting this out soon after you arrive means you already have a dentist in place if something goes wrong, rather than scrambling to find emergency care during exam season.
A routine check-up does more than look for cavities. It's a chance to screen for gum disease, check your bite, take X-rays where needed, and carry out an oral cancer screening, a useful early baseline for students who've recently changed diet, time zone and stress levels.
Can international students use NHS dental care?
If your visa includes the Immigration Health Surcharge, you're generally entitled to use the NHS on the same basis as a UK resident, and that includes NHS dental care. Two things surprise many students, though:
- NHS dental treatment is not free for most adults. It's charged at fixed NHS band rates set by the government, unless you qualify for help with costs (for example, if you're under 19 and in full-time education, or receiving certain benefits).
- NHS dental places can be hard to find. Many practices across London have limited NHS availability, so wait times vary. This is why a lot of students opt for a private check-up, it's quick to arrange and you're seen on your own timetable.
Either way, registering with a dentist is straightforward: in the UK you simply become a patient at a practice rather than being assigned one. You can read more on our general dentistry in Wimbledon page.
We're a short hop from the station and campus. Our practice sits at 92 High Street in Wimbledon Village, an easy walk or bus ride from Wimbledon station and the surrounding student areas of Merton. If your days are packed with lectures, we offer appointments across six days, including Saturdays by arrangement, handy for fitting a check-up around timetables, part-time work, or a morning spent watching the queues build for the Championships.
How often should a student have a check-up?
You don't necessarily need to come every six months. Current NICE guidance, followed by the NHS, recommends setting check-up intervals based on your individual risk rather than a fixed routine. As a general guide:
| Your situation | Typical recall interval |
|---|---|
| Lower risk, healthy teeth and gums, good oral hygiene | Up to 24 months |
| Average risk, generally healthy, occasional issues | Around 12 months |
| Higher risk, gum disease, frequent decay, smoking or vaping, high-sugar diet | As short as 3 months |
Your dentist agrees the right interval with you at your visit. For many students, a check-up at the start of the academic year is a sensible anchor point.

Student life can be tough on teeth, late nights, takeaways, energy drinks and stress all play a part. A few simple habits, backed by NHS guidance, make a real difference:
- Brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, and don't rinse with water straight after, spit, don't rinse.
- Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes.
- Go easy on sugary and acidic drinks, energy drinks and fizzy sodas are especially hard on enamel.
- Be aware of vaping and smoking risks, both raise the risk of gum disease and oral cancer.
- Don't ignore pain. A small problem caught early is cheaper and quicker to fix than an emergency.
If something does go wrong out of hours, our emergency dentist in Wimbledon page explains how to get seen quickly. And if you'd like a brighter smile for graduation photos, our teeth whitening options are popular with students too.

International students who pay the Immigration Health Surcharge as part of their visa are generally entitled to NHS treatment on the same basis as UK residents, including NHS dental care. NHS dental treatment is not free for most adults, but it is charged at fixed NHS band rates. NHS dental places can be limited, so many students choose a private check-up to be seen sooner.
The NHS and NICE advise that healthy adults may only need a check-up every 12 to 24 months, while those at higher risk may be recommended as often as every 3 months. Your dentist sets the right interval for you, and a check-up at the start of the academic year often works well.
At our Wimbledon practice a private new patient examination includes two X-rays and an oral cancer screening; contact us for current new-patient fees. A regular patient check-up is £80. A standard hygiene clean is £90. We are always happy to explain all costs clearly before any treatment begins.
