University is the moment a lot of people finally think about straightening their teeth. You're meeting hundreds of new faces, your photos suddenly matter more than they used to, and for the first time you're making decisions about your own health and money. But Invisalign isn't cheap, and student budgets are tight, so is it actually worth it? Here's an honest, Wimbledon-specific look at the costs, the commitment and the lifestyle, so you can decide for yourself.
Why so many students consider Invisalign
For a generation that grew up documenting everything, the appeal is obvious: clear aligners straighten your teeth without the metal-mouth look of traditional fixed braces. They're removable, virtually invisible, and they let you carry on with lectures, presentations, sport and nights out without announcing to everyone that you're having orthodontic work. For students who held off on braces as a teenager, or whose teeth have shifted since, it can feel like the right time.
There's a practical side too. Crowded or overlapping teeth can be harder to clean, which over years can raise the risk of decay and gum problems. Straightening isn't only cosmetic; it can make day-to-day cleaning easier, supporting the kind of long-term oral health that pays off well beyond your student years.
What does Invisalign cost, and can students afford it?
This is the real question. Invisalign is a private treatment, and prices depend on how much your teeth need to move. Here are our current, transparent Invisalign prices in Wimbledon, taken straight from our treatment list:
| Option | Typical case | From price |
|---|---|---|
| Free consultation (scan + 3D preview) | Everyone, before you commit | FREE |
| Invisalign i7 / Express | Mild front-teeth only (~3 months) | from £2,500 |
| Invisalign Lite | Mild crowding or spacing (~6–8 months) | from £2,500 |
| Invisalign Moderate | Moderate cases (~9–12 months) | from £2,900 |
| Invisalign Complete | Full correction (12–18 months) | from £4,200 |
| Vivera retainers (set of 3) | After treatment, to hold the result | prices on request |
The figure that makes it workable for students is finance, not the headline price. We offer 0% finance over 6 to 60 months, so a Lite case can be spread across your remaining time at university rather than paid up front. Splitting the cost into monthly payments is usually what turns "I can't afford that" into "that's manageable", and your exact quote is always confirmed in writing at the free consultation, with no obligation.

Mostly, no. NHS orthodontic treatment is generally reserved for under-18s with a genuine clinical need, assessed on the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). If you're 18 or over and want straighter teeth for cosmetic reasons, you'll almost always be looking at private treatment. It's also worth knowing that, contrary to a common myth, NHS dental check-ups aren't automatically free just because you're a student, though some students qualify for help with costs through the NHS Low Income Scheme. Either way, it's well worth keeping up with regular check-ups while you straighten.
The lifestyle commitment: what student life with aligners is really like
Invisalign only works if you wear it. The honest expectation is around 22 hours a day, taking the aligners out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth. For students, that comes with a few real-world quirks:
- Snacking and grazing become less casual, every time you eat you take the aligners out, then brush before putting them back in.
- Nights out are fine, but constant sipping of sugary or acidic drinks with aligners in can trap sugar against your teeth, so it's better to take them out.
- Discipline matters more than with braces, because they're removable, it's also easy to leave them out too long. Slipping below the recommended wear time slows your progress.
- Looking after them is simple but non-negotiable: rinse, brush gently and keep them in their case, not wrapped in a napkin where they end up in the bin.
For most of our younger patients, that trade-off is easy. The discreet, removable design genuinely suits university life better than a mouth full of brackets and wires.
Wimbledon is a brilliant base to do this from. With the University of Roehampton on the doorstep and an easy commute into central London colleges from Wimbledon station, plenty of local students live in and around SW19. We're a short walk from the High Street, our short check-in appointments fit between lectures, and you can take your aligners out for a run on Wimbledon Common or a Pimm's during The Championships, then pop them straight back in. London's water here is fairly hard, so we'll also show you how to keep your aligners clear and free of mineral build-up.
So, is it worth it?
For the right student, Invisalign can be genuinely worth it. If your teeth bother you in photos or knock your confidence, if you can commit to wearing the aligners properly, and if finance makes the cost manageable, the result is a permanent improvement you'll carry long after graduation. If you're not ready to commit to the daily routine, or your budget is stretched too thin, it's perfectly sensible to wait, straightening will be just as possible in a few years' time.
The smartest first step is simply to find out where you stand. A free consultation tells you which option suits your teeth, how long it would take and exactly what it would cost, and if Invisalign isn't right for you, we'll say so. You can get in touch with our Wimbledon team or learn more about teeth whitening, which many students add at the end of treatment for a finished result. Whatever you decide, our Wimbledon Village practice is here when you're ready.
Frequently asked questions
At our Wimbledon practice Invisalign starts from £2,500 for i7/Express and Lite (mild cases) and from £4,200 for Complete. The initial consultation with a 3D smile preview is free, and 0% finance over 6 to 60 months spreads the cost into manageable monthly payments, often the most practical route for students.
NHS orthodontic treatment is generally only free for under-18s who meet a clear clinical need on the IOTN scale. Most adult students aged 18 or over will need private treatment for cosmetic alignment. NHS check-ups aren't automatically free for students either, though you may qualify for help through the NHS Low Income Scheme.
For most students, no. Aligners are virtually invisible and removable, so you take them out to eat, play sport or for a night out, then put them back in. The main commitment is wearing them around 22 hours a day and keeping up with brushing. Many students find the discreet, removable design fits university life far better than fixed metal braces.
